I woke up nice and early, had a quick shower, paid my bill and left the hostel, I've been saying hostel but it is more like a hotel. I had arranged to meet a tuk tuk driver in the reception at 5.00am but he had not showed up, I waited a minute then left to the main road to hail a taxi or tuk tuk. I asked for the port to catch a boat to Iquitos, we arrived in about half and hour, I paid my $2 Soles fair and walked towards a big boat. I saw a few boats, but one was a huge cargo ship/passenger liner, it was nearly the same size as trans channel ferry going from Dover, England to Calais, France. There were a bunch of people sitting out the front, I asked them if it was the right boat, they said yes. Not having a clue what to do I waited around for a bit, some things were being loaded onto the boat, there were people walking back and forth at least. After a few minutes I was escorted on the boat by a plain clothed man, he took me on board and said a few things about the boat, said I needed a hammock and needed to buy a ticket. The cost of the boat ticket was $80 Soles, barely anything when you imagine that it is a four day, three night boat, travelling 1000km with breakfast, lunch and dinner all inclusive. The hammock was another $40 Soles, I handed over $120 Soles without thinking properly to somebody who could have just been a normal man trying to rip me off... he was in fact such a man. By this time, there was myself and about five other people on the boat. A couple of people on the boat noticed what had just happened, they asked how much I had given him and why, then chased after him. He was soon back on the boat, apologised and gave my money back, all of it. The couple that chased him down were a bar lady, and some bloke who works on the boat, they had a go at me for being so stupid and said that I shouldn't give my money to anyone, only the woman who selling tickets by the door. The bar lady asked me if I had a hammock, I said no, then I asked her how much they would cost me, she said around $25-35 Soles, more on the boat than in the markets but still not too bad, she lent me her hammock to sleep in for a bit whilst I waited for somebody to come round and sell me one.
