After a two day journey I finally arrived in Philadelphia. Like most times I didn't have anywhere to stay but had looked into a hostel I could try out. Annoyingly there are only two hostels in the whole of Philadelphia, one is in the old city centre and the other is a long way out of town. I had an address of a hostel that I got from Google maps, it was right near the other hostel that was listed on all the websites. The hostel I found was cheaper than the others so I tried there first. Like I thought it was too good to be true, the place didn't even exist and the address was a shop or something. I went to a café that had free wifi to try and assess the situation and see what I could do about it, I was in a sort of predicament. I found a cool little coffee shop and got an iced mocha and looked into solving my problem. I found the address of the proper hostel and headed straight there. It wasn't good news when I arrived, they were fully booked until after the weekend and it was only a Tuesday. They let me sit in the common area and watch some football game on TV. The staff there were pretty cool, in fact really cool, they looked into other hotels and gave me some ideas of what I could do. The hostel out of town was fully booked and all the hotels around the area cost an arm and a leg. I tried pricerunner.com but had no such luck, they didn't accept my lowest bid, the lowest I could find and afford would have been $70 a night which is way out of my budget but it was the only choice really. After the football game I could hear talking at the reception desk, the staff were talking to a hotel manager from a local hotel down the road. I was saved, she said that she would give competitive rates and offered me $50 a night to stay in the hotel. She said she should have some space for the first night but wasn't too sure if I could stay for any more, I would have to check in the morning. I took her up on her offer and had the room for $50. The room was okay, it had two separate rooms broken up by a bathroom in the middle. I had a view overlooking a park and Chestnut st, the main street with all the museums on. The hotel was in a really cool location, it was just on the edge of the old city so was walking distance to all the sights. I settled into my room at the 'society hill hotel' and relaxed, I at least had a nights accommodation sorted. There was a bar under the hotel but I had a look at the prices and it was extortionate, the cheapest beers were over five dollars. I had to find a better place to get my beer from.
